Technology

THE IGNITON SYSTEM

MWI AG is developing a microwave-based prechamber ignition system and a volume ignition system based on the same principle.

In these ignition systems, electromagnetic waves of a selected high-frequency range are introduced into the combustion chamber and propagate there at the speed of light. The di- and multipoles in the air-fuel mixture are stimulated by the alternating electromagnetic field to self-ignition. Within nanoseconds, a volume ignition is triggered in the entire combustion chamber. This principle can be applied in a prechamber as well as in the complete combustion chamber.

Technology

The effect

The technical principle of MWI technology enables ignitions of highly compressed lean mixtures, even at low combustion temperatures. Fuel consumption and emissions are significantly reduced.
An additional increase in efficiency is achieved by the significantly faster combustion process of the volume ignition. Enabling a nearly ideal combustion without significant heat losses.
MWI technology offers an unrivalled combustion potential due to its unique volume ignition.

PROTECTED KNOWLEDGE

GLOBAL PATENTS

MWI AG is the only company worldwide that has acquired fundamental technological knowledge about the ignition of various fuels using microwave energy. The registered patents protect this intellectual property and block market access for potential competitors. MWI AG already owns 39 patents in 36 countries, with more pending.

EXTERNALLY APPROVED RESULTS

REPORT ON MWI TECHNOLOGY

The research and measurement results of MWI AG on MWI prechamber ignition have been tested and confirmed by AVL in 2021.
Essential core statements are:

The MWI system provides thermodynamic advantages for combustion that offer an improvement of internal combustion engines or all spark ignited engines. (Comparison of MWI system, spark plug and reference prechamber with spark plug)

The superiority of the MWI system is independent of the mixture used - ignition with synthetic fuels and, for example, methane or hydrogen is possible. (Comparison of MWI system, spark plug and reference prechamber with spark plug)

The MWI system proves to be much more robust - even for late initiated combustions. (Comparison of MWI system, spark plug and reference prechamber with spark plug)

The higher combustion stability of the MWI system results in smoother running. The application of lean concepts is possible without losses in combustion stability. (Measuring point: Lambda variation at 2500 rpm and 7.8 bar IMEP)

The measuring points generated so far by MWI Micro Wave Ignition AG can be confirmed. (Measuring point: Lambda variation at 2500 rpm and 7.8 bar IMEP)
